No hits, but the defence made up for it. Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bae Ji-hwan helped his team to victory.
Bae started the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) home game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, batting sixth and playing second base.
He ended up going 0-for-4, dropping his season batting average from 0.275 to 0.268.
After retiring the first three batters he faced with a grounder-fly-out-fly-out, Bae struck out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Instead, he made his mark on the defence. Bae, who moved from second base to centre field during the game, made a diving catch of Nolan Gorman’s grounder to first base in the top of the eighth inning.
It was a defence that impressed Colin Holderman on the mound and his teammates in the dugout.
In the top of the ninth inning, Gorman wowed the home fans again when he chased down an Alec Burleson line drive and made a leaping catch. Closer David Bednar showed his appreciation with a round of applause.
With Bae’s grand slam, Pittsburgh held on for a 7-5 win over St. Louis to complete a three-game sweep and improve to 29-27 (.518) on the season. Starter Roansey Contreras struggled with five runs in four innings, but a no-hitter relay from the bullpen sealed the win 메이저놀이터.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres’ Ha-Sung Kim came on as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the eighth inning of a home game against the Chicago Cubs and made a clean play on leadoff hitter Christopher Morel’s single in the top of the ninth.
However, the Padres were only able to score one run against the Cubs, falling 1-2 and failing to win their second straight game.
